Sexuality Issues
Sex and sexuality are important issues for us all. Sex can be one of the most popular past-times for teenagers and adults. Regrettably neither sex nor sexuality are topics that are easily discussed in ordinary everyday life. Sex and sexuality affect almost every aspect of our daily lives and because we are often unable to discuss those matters in a safe and secure environment, issues often remain unresolved and then develop into problems for which solutions may appear difficult. Counselling and Psychotherapy should be non-judgemental and supportive so that the client is able to discuss issues that would be problematic in other situations.
Topics that can be addressed are as follows:
Although most clients do not enter into therapy because of sexual issues the fact is that sex and sexuality are topics that are of vital importance to most peoples’ happiness and well-being. If you are in therapy you should always feel safe raising sex, sexuality or any of the issues referred to above (and many more) with your therapist/counsellor.
Topics that can be addressed are as follows:
- Sexual orientation issues (please note that I adhere to an orientation affirmative approach – that means that if a client self identifies as gay, therapy will be gay affirmative, if heterosexual, therapy will be heterosexual affirmative and if bisexual, bisexual affirmative and so on)
- Fetishes (S&M, Leather, Master/Slave and so on)
- Sex addiction
- Porn use
- Gender identity issues (again all therapy will be affirmative with the object of supporting the client)
- Voyeurism
- Potentially harmful sexual practices etc
- HIV and sex
- Recovery from sexual abuse
